How engine hours are estimated as distance

Engine hours measure how long an engine has operated, not how far a machine traveled. This estimate subtracts entered idle or stationary time, then multiplies the remaining moving-equivalent hours by an assumed average moving speed. Distance equals moving-equivalent hours multiplied by average moving speed.

Why idle and stationary time matter

An hour meter can increase while a vehicle idles, loads, powers stationary equipment, or performs PTO work without covering distance. Enter that non-travel time as a percentage of total engine hours or as known hours so it does not create artificial mileage.
